Provide clear and discernable information every time to prevent assumption, University don urges Government Officials
A university don Dr Adebiyi Abosede has called on government officials to be proactive in providing information about their activities and performances to the public.
Dr Adebiyi said this while featuring as guest Speaker to discuss the impacts of Peddling Wrong Information, a programme organised by the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) Ogun State Chapter.
According to him, peddling of wrong information is present in all facets of life but usually done to achieve defined purpose. It is also necessary there to know what qualifies for wrong information? How is it formed and for what purpose? Is it different from lies? Who determines what is false? The sayer, the hearer or the affected?
“No information is absolutely right or wrong especially when it is clear that cognition differs from the point of users.
“What we take as falsehood, wrong information or lies are embellishments of available or perceived information to create defined impression to achieve partisan ends.
Ordinarily wrong information of any shade should be rare but because elders are decadent, youths have become delinquent,” he argued.
He identified factors accounting for prevalence of what in Nigeria is referred as fake news as; greed, desire to demean others, gain cheap popularity from paymasters, inordinate ambition, life of deceit etc.
According to him, governance based on propaganda breeds wrong information and inherent in propaganda is fake news.
Alleging that Nigerians enjoy negative stories about people. Dr. Adebiyi Abosede urged government officials to ensure transparency, accountability and readiness to provide information at all time in order to prevent suspicion and assumption. The desire for this brought about FOI bill,” he said.
